From expression Brouwn makes Tachisme and Informel, and from abstraction, erased form. By covering, veiling and, in a kind of iconoclasm, erasing the works of other artists, and by transforming them from the status of reproduced mass media back into unique pieces she has worked by hand, she frees them, as it were, from their traditional attributions. She allows them, as autonomous things-in-themselves and as part of her own works, to come to new life and to overcome their unjust and one-sidedly written (art) history.
From Polke she learned experimentation and collaboration, how to experience form and colour as material, and above all how to keep chance under control. Stanley Brouwn, in turn, led her to question the art system far more generally, structurally even. Less is more: ultimately, it is about how a single strong conceptual approach can unhinge the entire system. And so, at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, we are about to encounter one of the most interesting figures in contemporary art history and the protagonist of the American-European connection within Abstract Expressionism.
